Carter was born in Ferndale, Michigan. He started to play cello at the age of 10, and switched to bass while in high school. He earned a B.A. Guitarist Eric Gale, best known for his work in R&B, funk, and commercial settings, was presented by bassist/producer Ron Carter on a strictly jazz date in 1987.
