Now that Adobe has moved to subscription only software many people will be looking at alternative software products. One of those alternatives, to InDesign, is QuarkXPress. After a truly awful experience trying to buy, install and update QuarkXPress we've written this article to help you get up and running with QuarkXPress 9.x on a Mac.

One of the problems you will come up against with Quark is the need to create and use multiple user accounts across multiple different (but still Quark) web sites:

• User Account #1 - the online 'shop' account for making software purchases. If you buy boxed product you probably won't need this account but as many of you are probably upgrading from an old version of Quark (prior to version 7) the only way to purchase that type of upgrade is via Quark's online 'shop'.
• User Account #2 - the 'software download' account. You'll need this to download software installers and updates.
• User Account #3 - the 'store' account for registering your software and obtaining validation/activation codes. This will be your primary Quark account (for which you'll get a Quark ID) but the web site you use this on will be dependent on your location in the world.
• User Account #4 - the 'tech support' account. You'll probably need this if you cannot get validation/activation codes from the 'store' (#2) account.

The Process

1. Obtain QuarkXPress. The easiest way of doing this is to buy the software online from Quark and if you are taking advantage of one of their offers (like being able to upgrade from versions prior to 7) you must buy the software online. In the UK you buy from https://shop.quark.com/uk/
Buy boxed editions of QuarkXPress now at NOTE: You'll need to create user account #1 on this web site. The user account can't be used anywhere else and the 'Customer ID' is not a 'Quark ID' and is only relevant to this web site.NOTE: If you use Quark's online store to buy QuarkXPress don't use the link it gives you to download the QuarkXPress installer - it's out of date. If you bought a CD/DVD don't use the disc - the installer on it is probably out of date.
2. Once you have purchased Quark you will need to download the latest available installer for the software (this is currently v9.5.1.0).
3. Go to http://www.quark.com/en/Support/Downloads/Login.aspx.
NOTE: You'll need to create user account #2 on this web site. This user account is only relevant to this web site but it is needed to obtain software installers and updates.
4. Once you're set up and logged in go to http://www.quark.com/support/downloads/Details.aspx?fid=243.
5. This will take you to the QuarkXPress 9.5.1.0 software download where you can click the 'Download Now »' button.
NOTE: The web page says this is an 'updater' file type but it's actually a full installer so go ahead and download it.
6. Once it has downloaded (this may take a while as it's ~768MB in size) you can open the disk image and install the software.
7. When the software has installed and it asks for a validation/activation code stop - do not click on the links given in the software.
8. Go back to your web browser. If you are in Europe go to https://eurostore.quark.ch/. If you are in the USA go to https://store.quark.com/. It is important you go to the correct web site because if you don't your QuarkXPress serial number will not be recognised!
NOTE: You'll need to create user account #3 on this web site. Once you are registered make a specific note of your 'Quark ID'. If you are in Europe it should start with '14'. If you are in the USA it should start with '21'.NOTE: If you are upgrading from any earlier version of Quark you have to register your product on this web site first.NOTE: If you are upgrading from a version of Quark earlier than 7 the web site will probably not recognise the serial number. You will need to contact technical support.
9. Enter your activation code and activate QuarkXPress
NOTE: It is best that you are connected to the internet when you do this.
10. Now go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Quark Update > Updates tab and make sure 'How would you like to check for software updates?' is set to 'Manually'.
11. As the Quark Update software does not work properly with Apple's Gatekeeper security system go back to your web browser and go to http://www.quark.com/en/Support/Downloads/Login.aspx again (login using user account #2 if required).
12. Select 'Product: QuarkXPress', 'OS: Mac OSX' and 'File Type: Updaters' then click 'Search'.
13. Download both the 'QuarkXPress 9.5.1.1' (~9MB) and 'QuarkXPress 9.5.2' (~65MB) updates.
14. Install 'QuarkXPress 9.5.1.1' and then install 'QuarkXPress 9.5.2'.
NOTE: The updaters are not properly signed so Apple's Gatekeeper will stop these updates installing. You need to right/control click > Open on the update installer icons, read the OS warning message, click 'Open', ignore the Installer security certificate warning message and install each update.
15. You should now have a functioning QuarkXPress 9.5.2 software installed on your computer.
16. You're highly recommended to make a backup of the 'QuarkXPress 9.5.1', 'QuarkXPress 9.5.1.1' and 'QuarkXPress 9.5.2' disk images that you have downloaded so that you can use them again if you need to reinstall or you buy more than one licence and need to install the software on multiple computers.
NOTE: The standard licence allows you to install QuarkXPress on up to two different computers for use by 'one' person e.g. a single user's desktop and laptop computer. The software installation uses activation and is tied to the hardware it is installed on. If you need to install it on a different computer deactivate the software first by going to the QuarkXPress menu > Transfer QuarkXPress Licence… > click the 'Transfer Licence' button and follow the onscreen instructions.

Contacting Quark Technical Support

Using the telephone support is a very painful experience with most support staff not speaking or understanding basic spoken English. Therefore we recommend using the technical support web site instead.

1. Go to Quark's technical support web site (http://quark.parature.com).
2. Create a login by clicking the 'Sign In' button at the top and then clicking 'Create a New Account' button in the bottom left.
NOTE: You'll need to create user account #4 on this web site. The user account can't be used anywhere else. When you are registering your account be sure to enter your 'Quark ID' that you obtained from user account #3 above for the 'Quark Customer Number' field - this will help link your tech support account with your Quark user account where your software registrations are.
3. If you are upgrading from a version of Quark earlier than 7 or the Quark 'Store' web site won't recognise a serial number click on 'Submit a Ticket' in the top left.
4. Set the 'Priority' to 'High' and the 'Product Type' to 'QuarkXPress'.
5. Enter 'Cannot activate QuarkXPress' in the 'Summary' field.
6. In the 'Details' field explain that you are trying to install and activate QuarkXPress but you can't because your serial number is not accepted on the main Quark web site. Put in the details of all your software versions and serial numbers that you have.
7. Submit your ticket ('Finish >>' button) and wait for Quark to come back to you with your activation code.
